Drop-Downs of an Outer Rotor Flywheel in Different Planetary Touch-Down Bearing Designs

With an increase in renewable energy the electricity grid, more storage capacity for grid stabilization and flexibilization is necessary. Dynamic one possible application flywheels. To density of flywheels, they can be built as highly integrated outer rotor systems. The losses flywheel are reduced by magnetic levitation operation under vacuum conditions. In case failure or overload active bearings, system needs touch-down bearings to prevent destruction. Planetary consisting several small bearing units circumferentially distributed around stator especially suited these literature, planetary rarely investigated, number units. Therefore, this paper investigates influence elements simulations experiments 8-element a 6-element arrangement. For investigation, drop-downs at four different speeds were performed. Simulation experimental results showed that, bearing, contrast maximal velocity did not with drop-down speed. arrangement fewer preferrable.
